Hi All,
In my women's fellowship class at my church I need to find something referencing forty. I know that the Israelites were in the desert for forty years (I think), but I do not know where to find it. Does anyone of any reference of forty in the bible?

Thanks for the help

Tanya,

I also did a search and found several references. You may already be aware that the Hebrew and Greek language has numbers attached to the letters of their alphabet, not so in English. The number 40 is associated with the Hebrew letter "mem" and its usual meaning is associated with trials and testing. When you view the pertinent verses with the number 40, I think you will find this to be true!

Blessings,

Chelki

Exodus 34:6

Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, "The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;"

"Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!" -- Jesus, the Messiah!, our salvation.

Yes, Chelki, it is true that 40 relates to testing. There is much evidence of this in Scripture. For example, it rained 40 days and nights during the time of Noah's Flood. The people of Nineveh were given 40 days to repent before God would have destroyed them. The Israelites spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness. Moses lived 40 years in Egypt, 40 years in Midian as a shepherd, and 40 years leading the people through the wilderness. Moses was 40 days on the mountain to receive the law of God, while the Israelites were tested to see if they would be faithful during his absence. Israel was not to have an earthly king, but at their insistence, God provided one. Saul ruled for 40 years, David ruled 40 years, and then Solomon ruled 40 years. At the end of that time, it was clear that kings had failed the test of whether worldly kings could lead God's people; then the kingdom was split into the Southern (Israel) and Norhern Kingdoms (Judah). Jesus was tempted by Satan after 40 days.

Lydia & Chelki,
thank you so much for the information regarding the number Forty. We had not discussed the significants of the number forty yet, but this information will give me a heads up on its meaning. I have read several stories that included the forty years and forty days, but i never put it with test. I now have a new way of looking at it. thank you so much for your wisdom in the Lord and his word.

Lydia,
AMAZING isn't it?? I discovered that for myself when i was 39 years old (in my 40th year) which brought me into serious bible study and a great deal more understanding of YHVH. I am so glad someone else noticed the importance of 40. Smile
