ISAIAH
Isaiah 6:2
Again, because of the importance of this passage, some of my comments are taken from the book, The Beauty of Holiness by Dr. Michael P. V. Barrett. This vision that Isaiah saw was a divine revelation from God. This is the only passage in this portion of the Bible where seraphim are mentioned. The seraphim, or "burning ones", are personal, spiritual beings which have faces, feet and hands, who understand human language and moral concepts. They are not to be thought of as superior to God, but as being in the position of waiting upon Him as His attendants. Each seraph had three pairs of wings, each pair visually suggesting subservience. Each covered his face with two wings as a sign of reverence and awe before the Holy Lord. With two other wings he covered his feet, as an expression of humility and unworthiness. With the remaining two wings the seraphs flew as a sign of service to carry out the will of the Lord. The seraphs appear to be ready, obedient servants. What an awesome picture for us -- for if sinless creatures assume such a lowly position before the Lord, how much more should we as sinful men be careful not to presume a place of attention that would distract from our God, Who is to be the sole object of our worship. As we learn that this was Jesus Isaiah saw (John 12:41), we are reminded of the following scriptures: "In Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form." (Colossians 2:9) "God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name." (Philippians 2:9) Let it be so in our hearts! And let us be willing, obedient servants. |
